Avoid Getting and Spreading Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are hitchhiking insects that travel with people on their belongings, such as work bags. If you work in a profession where you are exposed to bed bugs, or if you are dealing with an infestation at home, you can take steps to prevent the spread of bed bugs by creating a clean zone at your home. This is an area where you transition from the outdoor world to your home. The idea is to have a bin for items that were out in the world, and a bin for items that are only used in the home. Upon return to your home, place daily items in one bin, and use home items, such as a pair of comfy clothing. Clothes from the day can be dropped onto the white sheet, balled up and run through the dryer (high heat, 122 F, for 15 minutes) to kill bugs.

We are developing a factsheet on this information that will be listed below when complete. In the mean time, refer to our guide, “How to Get Bed Bugs Out of Your Belongings” hdl.handle.net/1813/55760
