Bed Bug Bites, Rashes & Symptoms

Post date: October 6th, 2017

Bed bugs feed on blood as their only source of nutrition. In order to mature into adults, they must feed once during each of their immature stages. Adult females also need blood in order to produce eggs. Although bedbugs do bite humans, they are not known to transmit diseases to people.

How to Identify the BitesBlood spots found on ones sheets, bites and the presence of bed bug feces and cast skins are some of the indications of a bed bug infestation. Bites are commonly found on the parts of the body that are more likely to be exposed to bed bugs during sleep the hands, neck, face, shoulders, legs and arms. While not always the case, bed bug bites are often grouped together in a small area and at times may occur in a line or a zigzag pattern. Bites normally look like small, flat or raised areas that may become inflamed, itchy, red or blistered. Bed bug bite reactions dont always appear immediately after youre bitten and may take a few days to begin causing symptoms. However, not everyone reacts to bed bug bites in the same manner.

The size of bed bug bites varies with a number of different factors. Bed bugs inject an anti-coagulant along with their saliva when they pierce the skin to take a blood meal. This anti-coagulant is mostly responsible for how a person reacts to the bite and determines the size of the bugs bite. Since people will have various sensitivities to the bed bugs bite, the size of the bite will vary, as well. Another factor that influences the size of a bed bug reaction is the number of times a person is bitten. Bite reactions of people bitten many times are also variable, and their response may be either more or less intense as the number of bites increases.

Bed bugs pierce human skin with elongated beaks through which they extract blood. Bed bug bites are not initially painful and can go unnoticed for hours or days. This allows bed bugs to withdraw human blood for up to 10 minutes with each feeding. Bed bug bites occur most commonly on exposed skin, such as the upper body, neck, arms and shoulders.

Bite SymptomsSome individuals who are bitten by bed bugs develop itching, red welts or swelling the day after being bitten. However, bites may not become obvious for several days or at allon some individuals. Many people do not react at all to the bite of a bed bugmany bites leave no mark and go completely unnoticed.

Unlike those of other insects, bed bug bites may sometimesappear in tight lines of multiple, small, red marks where multiple bed bugs have fed along an exposed area. Bed bug bites can cause itchiness. Initially, a victim may detect a slight burning sensation. The burning area then develops red bumps, known as papules or wheals (rash). In extreme cases, bites may swell dramatically or turn into blister-like skin inflammations.

If you develop a rash after being bitten by a bed bug, avoid scratching the affected area. If the rash persists or becomes infected, contact a medical professional immediately.

Why Do They Bite?Bed bugs are blood feeders that depend on blood for their food source, so they must consume blood for survival.

One bed bug will usually take more than one bite. Once a bed bug inserts its mouthparts and finds a suitable blood vessel, it will begin feeding. However, finding the right blood vessel may take more than one injection into the skin. In addition, bed bugs are very sensitive to movement by the host they are feeding on. Therefore, if a sleeping person moves, a feeding bed bug will probably withdraw its mouthparts and begin its search for a blood meal on another part of the body. Its important to remember that the number of bites a person receives is not indicative of the number of bed bugs that feed on that person.

Risks Associated With InfectionsScratching bed bug bites and failure to keep the bites clean and disinfected may lead to a secondary infection that can cause further swelling and bleeding. Children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems, particularly those who are bedridden, may develop secondary infections that result from bed bug bites.

How To Identify Bites On PetsBites on dogs and cats will look much like bites on people, and the pet owner may actually suspect a mosquito or flea bit the pet. As with people, bed bugs do not stay on pets, but return to a protected harborage site after feeding. In addition to bites, the presence of the bugs feces, cast skins and the animals irritation at night are also indicators of bed bugs biting pets. Therefore, one of the best things to do is inspect the pets bedding and frequently groom the animal while being vigilant for the telltale signs of bed bug presence.

HOUSTON Five Harris County residents have filed suit against a Houston residential complex alleging they suffered damages from a bed bug infestation.

Named as plaintiffs in the case are Lady Guerrero, Zarion Harris and four minors and they are represented by the Rice Firm of The Woodlands. Listed as defendants in the case are JK 1000 Country Place LLC, The Park at Country Place and Excel Residential Services. The suit was filed May 19 in the Harris County District Court.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs moved into an apartment owned by the defendants in July 2015. The plaintiffs claim that there was no disclosure of bed bugs and if it had been disclosed there was an infestation, they would have not rented the property.

The complaint said that "not long after moving in, plaintiffs began to notice red, irritated bites on their bodies not realizing they were bed bug bites. Immediately after seeing the bedbugs, plaintiffs reported a bed bug infestation to leasing office."

The suit states the leasing office sent someone to do an inspection, who confirmed the confirmed the presence of bed bugs in the apartment and told plaintiffs the infestation had been in apartment for a while.

"Defendants fraudulently and intentionally concealed the fact their property had a prior bedbug problem from plaintiffs in order to fraudulently induce plaintiffs to rent the property," the complaint said.

The plaintiffs claim because of the bed bug infestation it caused them to suffer personal injuries and property damages. The plaintiffs also say they have incurred cleaning, extermination, attorney fees and other costs.

The plaintiffs claim they are suffering or will continue to suffer past and future medical, pharmaceutical and hospital expenses, past and future pain and suffering, past and future mental anguish, past and future mental anguish, past and future physical impairment, lost wages, property damage, exemplary damages, plus court costs.

The complaint also claims that the defendants have had prior bed bug infestation problems and despite this knowledge, defendants have failed to take reasonable steps to prevent further infestations.

According to Wikipedia, bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively blood and preferably human blood. Most bed bugs are active at night and they feed without being noticed. Health effects include allergic symptoms, psychological effects and most notably skin rashes.

A Houston couple are claiming their house became infested with bed bugs after the pests allegedly hitched a ride with them from an AMC movie theater.

Anthony VanDuyn said he and his wife attended a Friday showing of "All Eyez on Me" at the AMC Studio 30 on Dunvale when he began to feel itchy.

"I'm sitting there scratching my arms,"VanDuyn said. "My wife thought it was an allergic reaction. I've been through bed bugs more than once. We got up, walked out."

Bed Bug Symptoms

It may be hard to tell if you have bed bug bites or bites from another insect. Being aware of bed bug symptoms is the first place to start when diagnosing a bed bug problem. In general, bed bug bites will be red and generally have a darker red spot in the center. Bed bug bites can cause a very irritating itch. They will often form into a rash, made up of many small or raised bumps. These bumps will often appear in a line or as a cluster of dotsthis is because bed bugs tend to feed multiple times at the same location. Bed bug bites are also usually found on exposed parts of the body like the arms, legs, hands, neck and face.

Some of the first symptoms of bed bugs are blood spots on the bed, sheets and pillow case. Another telltale bed bug symptom is small black dots on sheets that resemble black pepper. This is bed bug poop. While they know how to hide, bed bugs may be seen moving about on the bed and other furniture between about 2 to 4 a.m. They may not be obvious to the eye at first, but you can spot the bed bugs through inspection. Bed bugs are flat are resemble a small dark apple seed.

Another bed bugs symptom may be that sleeping partners have completely different reactions to the bed bug bites. For example, one sleeping partner may have no reaction at all while the other may have an allergic reaction including hives, blisters or severe itching.

A doctor should be seen if you have had an allergic reaction or intense skin reaction to bed bug bites. Bed bug extermination is needed to eradicate a bed bug infestation (bed bugs will not leave on their own accord!)

One of the most hotly contested debates today involves the recent uptick in violent crime and the extent to which increases in violence may be explained by the "Ferguson effect," whereby the increased scrutiny of police since the 2014 Ferguson unrest has been hypothesized to lead police officers to become more hesitant and less aggressive. Chicago is an epicenter for much of this controversy, and on numerous occasions President Trump has threatened to "send in the feds."

In an article published today in Significance, the official magazine and website of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and the American Statistical Association (ASA), Arizona State University professors Sherry Towers and Michael D. White examine violence in Chicago and test whether the trends are consistent with the "Ferguson effect." They also test a competing claim proposed by Former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton that much of the recent violence in Chicago is tied to the proliferation of guns in that city.

Towers and White found no evidence of a Ferguson effect in Chicago.

"Murders and gun assaults in Chicago began increasing before Michael Brown's death in Ferguson," says Towers, a research professor in the Simon A. Levin Mathematical and Computational Modeling Sciences Center at Arizona State University in Tempe.

They did find a strong association between firearms availability and gun violence in Chicago, supporting Commissioner Bratton's argument.

"Our analysis highlights the importance of including measures of firearms proliferation when studying trends in violence in Chicago and elsewhere," says White, a policing expert and professor in the ASU School of Criminology and Criminal Justice in Phoenix.

A report out of Australia demonstrates for the first time that bed bugs can induce a potentially dangerous (and possibly even deadly) systemic reaction in individuals repeatedly exposed to them.

Editors note: This article is based on an Oct. 26, 2016, paper in Austral Entomology (Australian Entomological Society) titled Systemic and erythrodermic reactions following repeated exposure to bites from the Common bed bug Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). The paper can be found here. The following information is reprinted in PCT with permission of Stephen Doggett, Department of Medical Entomology, Pathology West Westmead Hospital, Westmead, Australia.

As always, pest management professionals should never offer medical advice to their clients. This article is provided for informational purposes only.

Bed bugs (Cimex spp.) readily bite humans, producing a range of cutaneous reactions. This article documents systemic reactions in two patients following repeated bites from the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius. Both patients had previously fed bed bugs on themselves without any serious complication, however, upon feeding a new batch of the insects, they subsequently developed systemic urticarial reactions. Both were admitted to an emergency department for treatment and subsequently made a full recovery.

Patient 1 fed 40 to 50 bed bugs on himself and after eight minutes, he developed itch, swelling of the face, lethargy, profuse sweating and widespread wheals on the torso and limbs. The reaction disappeared in five hours after treatment with systemic prednisone and antihistamines. Patient 2 developed a similar reaction after feeding five to six bed bugs on himself. In this case, the patient also developed chest tightness and breathing difficulties. Following a similar treatment, symptoms disappeared in four hours.

In light of the increasing exposure of this insect to the general public, systemic reactions in patients may present more commonly to the medical practitioner. This report demonstrates how bed bugs can be a serious threat to the health of the community. If people are constantly exposed to bed bug bites (especially in low-income housing), then the effects can be extremely harmful to the individual.

DISCUSSION. There are a limited number of published cases of systemic reactions to bed bugs and symptomology has been ill defined. Consequently, these reactions can create a diagnostic dilemma for health-care professionals. A diverse number of dermatological differential diagnoses exist. Multiple bed bug bites are typically characterized by a cluster or linear distribution of erythematous macular lesions and can progress to wheals and widespread urticarial (Doggett & Russell 2009).

Although rare, systemic reactions can involve widespread pruritis, asthma, anaphylaxis and fever (Doggett et al. 2012). There is increasing evidence to support sensitization after initial exposure to bed bugs with the latency period between bed bug bite and cutaneous reaction decreasing substantially between subsequent bites (Reinhardt et al. 2009).

In the case of the 28-year-old male, he had been exposed to bed bug bites since November 2012 and has developed progressively more severe cutaneous reactions from each subsequent bite.

CONCLUSION. Physical impacts of bed bug bites are of growing concern, and there has been a surge of legal disputes throughout the western world recently. State and local governments have been overwhelmed with complaints by residents in regards to bed bug infestations, which are at times resistant to pest control measures (Aultman 2013). Bed bug infestations have become a particular problem among the socially disadvantaged, where infestations often go untreated, leading to massive bed bug populations and ongoing bites. Therefore, patients with systemic reactions may increasingly present to medical practitioners.

CONSUMER REPORTS - The sight of bed bugs is enough to put a damper on your vacation but the bites can cause a variety of symptoms from secondary skin infections like impetigo and ecthyma to allergic reactions and in rare cases anaphylaxis which can impair breathing and require a trip to the ER.

With spring break coming up, the experts at Consumer Reports share some tips to keep the bed bugs away during your next hotel stay. Some simple steps when you check in can help avoid hassles and expenses when you check out.

It might sound extreme, but to be safe, put your luggage in the bathroom as soon as you enter the hotel room.

Bed bugs prefer anything dark and creviced that they can hide in like bedding, seams of fabric, furniture, even inside walls so the bathroom is usually a the safe zone while you search the room for signs of critters.

Check the sheets, mattress and box spring for any signs of bed bugs. Look for dark, rust colored spots and exoskeletons - the casings the bugs leave behind. Dont forget to look at the head of the bed and in, around and behind the headboard, too.

Be sure to lift and check under the mattress, too. While this room was clear its important to take action if you do find anything suspicious.

If you find any signs of bed bugs alert the manager immediately and ask for a new room in a different part of the hotel. Infestations can spread from wall to wall.

Even if your room is clear Consumer Reports says its a good idea to keep your luggage and clothes on off the floor on a hard surface or luggage rack, clear of any potential bed bug zones.

Consumer Reports says when you get home throw all of your clothes into a hot dryer for 30 minutes. And store your empty luggage in your basement, garage or a hot attic.
