Desiccant Dust Application

Desiccant dusts such as diatomaceous earth can be used to kill bed bugs when applied to cracks and crevices. As the insect walks over the dust, it either scratches the exoskeleton, or absorbs it (silica aerogel), which both lead to death from dehydration. For it to be most effective, dust should not be applied in large clumps, and should be used only in dry areas.

For more information about implementing this technique, see the section starting on page 59 of our guide, “How to Get Bed Bugs Out of Your Belongings” hdl.handle.net/1813/55760
