(WINDSOR, ON) It is a list most cities would rather not appear on. According to one of the nations largest pest control companies, there are ten other cities with a bed bug problem which overshadows the one in Windsor.

Windsor is number eleven on the first ever list of cities with the most incidences of bed bugs. The national bed bug situation, says pest exterminator Orkin Canada, which compiled the list, is expected to get worse.

From what the company is seeing, this could be a bumper year for the pesky tiny bugs. To compile its list, Orkin staff counted up the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments it is asked to carry out in Canadian cities.

It should be noted that the results are only based on the work Orkin does and is not a comprehensive survey of bed bug cities.

The top ten cities suffering from bed bugs are:

Orkin says it has been told by entomologists that having a clean room does not prevent bed bugs. The nuisance bugs can lay up to ten eggs in one day. Those detecting signs of bed bugs are advised to seek expert advice to prevent widespread infestation.

There are measures travellers can take when they rent hotel or motel rooms to avoid bringing the bugs home. They should always check their accommodations for signs of the bugs. Orkin advises the best methods are to thoroughly inspect all beds, soft furnishings, and framed pictures. Things to look for include insects, blood stains, dead bugs, and eggs.

Luggage should be elevated and away from soft furnishings such as couches.

On return to your home, tourists should not bring their luggage directly into their homes. It is advised to leave it in the garage and to put all clothing in the dryer at the highest appropriate temperature for at least 15 minutes.

The city rankings were based on all bed bug treatments by Orkin Canada at residential and commercial properties within Canada from July 1, 2016, to June 30, this year.

St. John's has made it to the top of another list, but this time it's not for the colourful houses or oceanfront location.

The most easterly city in Canada is also housing a host of unwanted guests bedbugs.

Pest control company Orkin Canada released data gathered from the number of treatments it performed at both residential and commercial properties throughout the country from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017.

Toronto topped its list of bedbug ridden cities, followed by Winnipeg, Vancouver, Ottawa, St. John's, Edmonton, Halifax, Sudbury, Scarborough and Calgary.

Bedbugs rely on humans for more than just lunch.

Orkin released its list of the 25 most bed bug-ridden cities in Canada. (Orkin Canada)

"They're great little hitchhikers, and unfortunately we're a great mode of transport," said Ken Penney, service manager for Orkin in St. John's.

"From our luggage, purses, bags, wallets, cell phone casesthese are all the ways we have confirmed bed bugs navigating from one place to the other."

Penney points to the oil boom and a reliance on the tourism industry for St. John'shigh ranking among much bigger cities on the list.

"In recent years we've become an oil-based society and we rely heavily on tourism, hence we inherit the trends that come with those industries," Penney told CBC Radio's St. John's Morning Show.

"Increased tourists means increased hotel capacities, [workers] travelling between job sites, shared quarters, carpooling and disposable income, which also means vacationing, so all of these things are part of the bed bug equation.

"So it has increased, but that's the cost of our lifestyle."

The parasitic insects tend to live and hide in the areas where we sleep, but they aren't limited to hotels and apartment buildings, Penney said. They've been found in buses, taxis, theatres, food courts and offices.

Some people get red, itchy spots when bitten by bedbugs, some show no signs at all, Penney said, so it isn't always obvious there is a problem.

Penney has seen infestations so severe they had to tear out the walls and flooring in a home and throw out all the furniture.

"And the occupants are just there stood up saying, 'I had no signs, I didn't know that this happened,' and we're finding hundreds of bugs in behind almost every obstacle."

This fed, adult bed bug is no bigger than an apple seed. (Sudbury & District Health Unit/www.bedbugsinfo.ca)

Bedbugs can thrive in a spotlessly clean room, and one female bedbug can lay one to five eggs per day, so vigilance is key.

Penney's best advice is to thoroughly inspect the area around your bed, including linens, creases in mattresses and furniture, the box spring, headboard and framed pictures.

Look for insects adults are reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed eggs, blood stains and fecal matter.

"St. John's is a small city, but it's also one of North America's oldest cities, hence we shouldn't believe we should be impervious to one of North America's oldest pests."

HOUSTON Five Harris County residents have filed suit against a Houston residential complex alleging they suffered damages from a bed bug infestation.

Named as plaintiffs in the case are Lady Guerrero, Zarion Harris and four minors and they are represented by the Rice Firm of The Woodlands. Listed as defendants in the case are JK 1000 Country Place LLC, The Park at Country Place and Excel Residential Services. The suit was filed May 19 in the Harris County District Court.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs moved into an apartment owned by the defendants in July 2015. The plaintiffs claim that there was no disclosure of bed bugs and if it had been disclosed there was an infestation, they would have not rented the property.

The complaint said that "not long after moving in, plaintiffs began to notice red, irritated bites on their bodies not realizing they were bed bug bites. Immediately after seeing the bedbugs, plaintiffs reported a bed bug infestation to leasing office."

The suit states the leasing office sent someone to do an inspection, who confirmed the confirmed the presence of bed bugs in the apartment and told plaintiffs the infestation had been in apartment for a while.

"Defendants fraudulently and intentionally concealed the fact their property had a prior bedbug problem from plaintiffs in order to fraudulently induce plaintiffs to rent the property," the complaint said.

The plaintiffs claim because of the bed bug infestation it caused them to suffer personal injuries and property damages. The plaintiffs also say they have incurred cleaning, extermination, attorney fees and other costs.

The plaintiffs claim they are suffering or will continue to suffer past and future medical, pharmaceutical and hospital expenses, past and future pain and suffering, past and future mental anguish, past and future mental anguish, past and future physical impairment, lost wages, property damage, exemplary damages, plus court costs.

The complaint also claims that the defendants have had prior bed bug infestation problems and despite this knowledge, defendants have failed to take reasonable steps to prevent further infestations.

According to Wikipedia, bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively blood and preferably human blood. Most bed bugs are active at night and they feed without being noticed. Health effects include allergic symptoms, psychological effects and most notably skin rashes.

AURORA, Colo. Bed bugs are creating an ongoing nuisance for tenants at a northwest Aurora apartment building as landlords across the country find it difficult to properly exterminate the pests. Studies from this year indicate bed bugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides.

When I moved here, my son and I enjoyed it, Stapleton Apartments tenant Max Vaughns said. We [were] having fun.

But over the last three months, Vaughns said he has spent some nights in his truck to get away from bed bugs. Pictures provided to FOX31 show what Vaughns claims is evidence of bed bug bites and his young sons allergic reaction.

Written notice of entry into Vaughns apartment at 2201 Dayton Street explains pest control crews treated the apartment on more than one occasion. Each time, Vaughns said, nothing was resolved.

Exterminators told FOX31 killing the bugs is a difficult job. Roughly 3,500 homes are treated for bed bugs in the Denver area every year, according to exterminators.

Tenants at Stapleton Apartments said management has admitted that Vaughns is not alone.

Vaughns, upset the issue hasnt been resolved, said he has stopped paying rent and is now facing eviction. He plans to be out of his unit within one week. Meanwhile, hes hoping this story will serve as a warning for anyone searching for an apartment.

I just want to make sure that others are aware of whats going on, Vaughns explained.

FOX31 called apartment management on Sunday and is still waiting for comment.

How to get rid of Bed Bugs. – Fox Weekly

Post date: July 31st, 2017

For someone who has not dealt with the nuisance of a bedbug infestation on household furniture, the shudder of those who have might seem extreme. The visceral reaction to the smell of a squashed bed bug and the itch of being bitten is all too real for those who have had such experiences. The annoying aspect of a bedbug infestation is their resilience. These little bugs are hardy and even harder to kill.In a span of 37 days on the average, bedbugs go from eggs to adulthood. From the beginning of their life, bedbug nymphs are ready for a blood meal. Bedbugs survive by ingesting the blood of their host (bloody little vampires).

They can survive on the ingested blood for months without needing a refill (I wonder the kind of engine that powers them). And they dont discriminate humans, cats, dogs- all are fair game. What more, their life cycle is 10 months to a year (really uncommon for critters in the insect kingdom) but they are aggressively active when it comes to mating. The typical female bedbug can lay hundreds of eggs in her life span. Now imagine how hard it is to get rid of bugs that breed that fast irrespective of whether they starve or not.

Normal insecticides dont work well on bedbugs, partly due to where they like to hang out in the seams of the mattress, folds of furniture materials and clothing. Basically, all nook and crannies where there is a high probability of coming into contact with human skin, too tight for casual inspection and dark. However, we would not leave you hanging as to how to get rid of these nasty little buggers.

Our solution is a homemade brew that can percolate (while you sip your coffee) into their hideouts talk about taking the fight to them. The chemicals needed are things you already use in the kitchen and around the house, hence it is inexpensive.

You will need:

Then follow the following procedure. No need for goggles. There are no explosions involved.

Note: If you dont have a teacup or you need a larger/ smaller quantity then you can use any container for the measurement. The important bit is to use the same proportional measurement for all the components.Pour the resulting mixture into a spraying container (you have just taken your first step as an industrial chemist. Congrats!). Head over to the infested furniture and spray the edges and folds (higher chance of finding them there). Then spray the rest of the furniture. Repeat the spraying in two days or three days to be sure you got them all.
